STD (Sexually-transmitted disease) infections are spreading fast in NYC. If not resolved soon, could bring about a public health crisis.
In recent years, new cases of common STDs such as syphilis, Chlamydia, and gonorrhea have been rising at surprising rates. The CDC estimates that in the United States alone this year there will be 20 million new people who will become infected with an STD. Yet what is most disturbing about these numbers is that half of those who will be infected will be young people, between 15-24 years old.
The NY Post reported late last year that NYC millennials are by far the most infected group in NYC. New Yorkers under 34 years of age accounted for most new infections of syphilis, gonorrhea, and Chlamydia.
According to City statistics in 2015, the rate of reported cases of Chlamydia among the young millennial female population (Ages 15-34 ) was 11137.4 per 100,000, in other words more than 10% per 100,000 people. The 2015 cases of Chlamydia among the young millennial population among females (Ages15-34) accounted for 80% of total reported female cases per of Chlamydia in NYC. The total number of reported female cases Chlamydia was 38, 280 in NYC.
According to the City Statistics in 2015, the total number of reported male cases of Chlamydia were 24,564. The rate of reported of Chlamydia among the Young millennial males (Ages 15-34 ) occurred at a rate of 6199.8 per 100,000 which accounted for 80.7% of total reported male cases of Chlamydia in NYC in . Keep in mind that these numbers only reflect the reported cases of Chlamydia and not the total real number of infected people in NYC with an STD. According to the CDC, in 2015 New York overall saw a 4.9% increase in cases of Chlamydia, 9.3 rise in syphilis, and a shocking 23% increase in cases of gonorrehea.
The rates of STDs are increasing Borough by Borough. In 2015 according to the CDC, those living in Manhattan and the Bronx live in the highest population density for STDs in NYC. Overall, four out of the five boroughs ranked in the top 70 counties in the United States with a high rate of STDs among the population. for three separate diseases Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis. The Bronx is 3rd and Manhattan is 10thin the nation in the rate of cases of Chlamydia (Per 100,000) with Brooklyn and Queens ranking 24th and 51st.
For the rate of cases of Gonorrhea and Syphilis (per 100,000), Manhattan ranks ahead of The Bronx and other boroughs in NYC. Manhattan is ranked nationally 11th in new cases of Gonorrhea (per 100,000) and in new cases of 6th Syphilis (Per 100,000). For Gonorrhea and Syphilis, 4 out of the 5 boroughs rank among the 70 counties in the United States for rate of new infections (per 100,000). In terms of new cases of Gonorrhea for the remaining boroughs, The Bronx ranks 22nd, Brooklyn ranks 39th, and Queens ranks 65th. For new cases of Syphilis in the remaining boroughs, The Bronx ranks 13th, Brooklyn ranks 35th, and Queens ranks 60th.
Best ways to limit STDs
Besides the use of condoms and taking conventional treatments prescribed by Doctors, individuals can reverse STD infection and boost their immune system by simply making the right changes to their diet.
